The boat owners who buy from me tend to be pretty successful types. Often they are business leaders and they are driven to succeed and better themselves, both in their professional and personal lives.
Translating that to their boat buying habits, it often means a relentless drive, not only for a newer boat every few years but also a bigger boat. I’ve heard it referred to as “4-foot-itis”… ‘If only I had a boat that was another 4 foot longer then that would be just perfect’ … But it never stops!
Now, don’t get me wrong, bigger boats can be great, BUT, I’m convinced that there comes a point for every owner where they go a step too far…
They buy a bigger boat and end up using it less rather than more; whether that’s because it’s just a bit too big to handle comfortably, or it’s too expensive to run, or it won’t fit into their favourite little harbour with ease, or they lose the original connection they had with the water…. Or whatever…
There is definitely a sweet spot, and my advice is to find it and then stick to it.
For me and my family this Maxum 2400 SC3, a 24ft trailerable sports cuddy is our sweet spot, and I’ll tell you why.
I started out in boating as a kid spending our summers messing around in 16ft and 17ft open boats and bowriders. We would swim, water ski and have barbecues on little beaches with shallow approaches.
It was fantastic.
As I got older, our boats started to get bigger, bit by bit. This continued when I got into the boat business. We had a few great cuddy cabin boats on route to a 24ft sports cruiser, then a 26ft cruiser and finally a 38ft Sports Cruiser.
With each successively bigger boat I had these great romantic notions of going away for a week or 10 days at a time and cruising the west coast of Scotland. I also thought, “maybe I’ll move it to the Med next summer…”
Well, you can probably guess… None of this ever happened.
In fact, in 18 months of ownership of our 38 footer, we stayed overnight once… and it never stopped raining that whole weekend!
With two small kids, and the responsibilities of a business to run, the romantic notions of what we dream of doing with the boat just are not realistic right now.
So we moved back to a cuddy cabin sports boat and haven’t looked back since..
The boat gets used more, it’s easier to maintain and store, it capitalises on cockpit space (which is where we spend our time onboard), it’s great for watersports and it still has a space where the kids can go for a nap and get out of the elements on longer days out on the water.
For us it’s the best of both worlds and most importantly it’s allowed us to get back to what we loved about boating as kids… The wind in your hair, salt in your nostrils, close to the water experience.
Will I ever buy a bigger boat?…
Undoubtedly, yes… I haven’t given up on that Mediterranean dream, when the time is right.
But right now this is our sweet spot.
